For ten years, Mr. Shelton faced the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease with remarkable perseverance. Even as the disease progressed, the love and dedication he inspired in his family remained constant. His journey became a powerful example of resilience, patience, and the enduring strength of the human spirit.

Mr. Shelton believed that education opens doors and creates opportunities. He valued learning not only for the knowledge it provides, but for the confidence and determination it builds in young people as they shape their futures.

A Legacy of Perseverance

In honor of Gerald Shelton’s life and the perseverance he demonstrated during his battle with Alzheimer’s disease, the Cobb Schools Foundation is proud to establish the Gerald Shelton Perseverance Scholarship .

This scholarship reflects the values Mr. Shelton lived by — resilience, determination, and the belief that education can help students overcome obstacles and reach their goals.

Cobb EMC Foundation Supports Expansion of STRIVE Program in Cobb County Schools

The Cobb County Public Schools Education Foundation is proud to share that we have been awarded funding from the Cobb EMC Foundation to support the expansion of STRIVE (Student Resilience, Intervention, and Vital Environments) across Cobb County schools.

This funding will strengthen trauma-informed care initiatives that directly support students’ social, emotional, and behavioral well-being. Through the STRIVE program, schools are better equipped to respond to student needs with compassion, structure, and proven strategies that promote long-term success.

Support from the Cobb EMC Foundation will help advance key components of STRIVE, including Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI) training, the development of sensory spaces, and an incentives store that encourages positive behavior and engagement. These resources play a vital role in creating safe, supportive environments where students can regulate emotions, build resilience, and stay connected to learning.

The Cobb Schools Foundation is honored to recognize the generosity of longtime Smyrna resident Ned Castleberry, whose vision and commitment have established a scholarship fund that will impact Campbell High School students for years to come.

The Leslie Marie Walker and Ned Castleberry Scholarship Fund is a heartfelt tribute to Mr. Castleberry’s friend and former Campbell educator, Leslie Marie Walker, a cherished English teacher. Her dedication to her students and passion for education left an indelible mark on the community. Walker, who passed away in recent years, inspired countless students during her tenure, fostering a love of learning and a commitment to excellence.

“It is my privilege to honor Leslie’s memory by supporting the students she cared so deeply about,” said Mr. Castleberry. “This scholarship fund reflects her enduring belief in the power of education to transform lives.”

Through Mr. Castleberry’s generosity, Campbell High School seniors now have the opportunity to apply for two distinct scholarships : the Educational Scholarship and the Vocational & Technical Scholarship . Both awards are valued at $5,000 each and are designed to support up to eight students annually.

The Educational Scholarship is tailored to students pursuing degrees in English, Education, Journalism, or Communications at Georgia colleges, universities, or technical schools. Recipients are chosen based on academic excellence, financial need, leadership, and a commitment to community service—qualities Leslie herself inspired in her students. Celebrating Resilience: The Sources of Strength Peer Leader Scholarship

The Sources of Strength Peer Leader Scholarship honors students who have gone above and beyond to promote resilience, connection, and well-being within their schools. These student leaders embody the heart of the Sources of Strength program—fostering hope, help, and strength among their peers—and serve as role models for building healthier, more connected school communities.

Proceeds from our Miles for Mental Health Virtual 5k provides scholarship awards each worth $1,000 to three outstanding students across the Cobb County School District. Recipients will be graduating seniors who have dedicated themselves to the Sources of Strength Peer Leader program for at least two years and are ready to carry forward those lessons into their post-secondary education.

Who We Are:

Sources of Strength is a nationally recognized, evidence-based program focused on suicide prevention, mental health promotion, and building protective factors for students and adults. Rather than concentrating only on risks, Sources emphasizes resilience, connection, and belonging—empowering individuals with tools to seek help, support others, and build healthy coping strategies. Through peer leadership, training, and a strength-based approach, the program creates a culture of wellness that benefits entire school communities.

Honoring a Hero: The Terry Watson Scholarship Fund

The Osborne High School community is coming together to honor the legacy of Terry Watson, a beloved school social worker whose dedication to students spanned over 30 years. Former school social worker Penny Warren is leading the charge in establishing the Terry Watson Scholarship Fund, ensuring that his passion for student success continues to impact lives for generations to come.

Terry Watson was more than an educator—he was a beacon of hope for countless students. As the founder of the Osborne Prevention Task Force, he built bridges between the school and the community, fostering partnerships that provided critical resources to local youth. His innovative approach to mental health services, unwavering advocacy, and compassionate mentorship helped numerous students navigate life's challenges and reach graduation.

“Terry became concerned one day at school about an absent student and rushed to their home in the ‘nick of time’ to save that student from a life-altering event,” Warren recalls. “The word ‘save’ is a good description of him, in that he saved so many from despair, from being dropouts, from feeling unworthy, from not having a purpose or direction. Terry was the ultimate social worker in the Cobb County school system, and I’m honored to have patterned my own work after his style.”

Tragically, Terry Watson lost his life in an act of ultimate selflessness—saving his family from harm. Even in his final moments, he embodied the spirit of service that defined his career and his character.

To commemorate his profound impact, the Terry Watson Scholarship Fund has been established at Osborne High School. The fund will provide financial support to students in need, ensuring that Terry’s legacy of compassion and empowerment lives on.

Community members are invited to contribute to the scholarship fund, helping to sustain the life-changing work that Terry championed. Donations will directly support Osborne students, giving them the opportunity to pursue higher education and brighter futures—just as Terry would have wanted.

2023 School Year Family Stabilization Report

2023 Family Stabilization Report

When we established the Family Stabilization Fund, we knew it was important because throughout the Cobb County School District there are nearly 50,000 students whose families qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our social workers partner with many local nonprofits, which help tremendously, but there were some cases where time was so limited that by the time the referral was received, it could be too late. Our students and their families could be living in their cars or be displaced, or simply need graduation attire in order to walk across the stage.

The Cobb Schools Foundation Board of Directors set out to help bridge this gap by establishing this fund. The fund represents a strong partnership between our community, the Foundation, social workers, and our students. This partnership is completely dependent on the hearts of our donors, who feel compelled to support families when life takes an unforeseen turn. Our social workers identify students who are typically struggling at school in some way and they intervene. When a financial situation is discovered, they perform a financial assessment and come up with a plan that best fits the needs. If they are urgent and are on the brink of sending a family into a crisis situation, this fund is there to help.

During 2020, we had just established the fund and because of the support from the community, we were able to provide over 1,000 devices to students who didn't have access to technology at home during the pandemic. Since then, we have been using the funds to support unmet needs. Our 2021-2022 report will demonstrate how this fund helps and where the funds are utilized.

REACH SCHOLARSHIP FOR STUDENTS

The North Cobb Rotary Club has once again adopted a rising eighth grade student from a middle school in north Cobb, who can benefit from helping hands. Through the Cobb Schools Foundation and their partnership with REACH Georgia, up to eight students from any Cobb County middle school may qualify to receive a scholarship that will provide them with a sizeable scholarship towards their post-secondary education.

For every $4,000 raised through the Cobb Schools Foundation, REACH Georgia will provide matching funds in the amount of $6,000, for a total of a $10,000 scholarship. This opportunity is provided as a needs-based scholarship, requiring good behavior, good grades, and having a coachable attitude.

2021/22 North Cobb Rotary President, Joe Stockman shared that, “our rotary club is excited to support a scholarship that essentially more than doubles itself by the time the student is graduating. No other investment has ever seen earnings like that, but more importantly we are thrilled to invest in students who are attending schools that our members are near and volunteer with.”

The student selected this year attends Pine Mountain Middle School, where the North Cobb Rotary recently volunteered for an outdoor service project that provided a refresh to the Jack Hensley Memorial Garden.

Principal David Nelson is looking forward to celebrating the 2022/23 REACH Student in an upcoming ceremony to be held at Pine Mountain Middle School.

What is Family Stabilization?

A 4 ^th grader at a CCSD elementary school experienced a major health crisis resulting in a month-long hospitalization. The student’s dad is a single father without transportation of his own, working a construction job to make ends meet. Several days of work were lost, due to supporting his student’s hospitalization, and juggling the finances and the emotional toll. This unexpected loss of income resulted in compounding hardships.

Thanks to donors like Cobb EMC Foundation and many others, the Cobb Schools Foundation is able to provide family stabilization grants to some of our families in crisis. The fund was established with the intent to support unexpected financial losses due to extraordinary circumstances.

Last year we supported 140 students throughout the Cobb County School District by providing afterschool scholarships, housing assistance, or filling in for food insecurities. Nearly 50,000 students throughout the school district are considered economically disadvantaged, which is where this fund can be critical in preventing homelessness or providing a safe environment for students after school.

Crane Elder Law Firm will match donations up to $5,000 if you support the All In Campaign, Learning Interventions Initiative. For several years, gifts from Crane Elder Law Firm have gone directly to HAVEN Academy , which serves students with severe Emotional Behavior Disorders and Autism. The program serves students from Cobb and Douglas counties, and the city of Marietta. Their support has made it possible to offer music therapy and provide special equipment to assist with mobility and self-managing.

H.A.V.E.N. implements therapeutic interventions which are cognitive and behavioral in nature. Students are taught to replace their maladaptive behaviors with prosocial behaviors. They are also taught skills that will generalize in multiple settings. Progress meetings are scheduled frequently to readjust based upon the needs of the student.

Cobb Middle School Students Earn Opportunity for $10,000 Scholarship

As eight Cobb middle school students sat poised and ready to sign their names to a future $10,000 scholarship opportunity, their families watched on with smiles. There was a twinkle of pride in their eyes. Many snapped photos. Tears streamed down the face of at least one mom.

The future Cobb graduates were selected for the opportunity to achieve a $10,000 scholarship upon high school graduation. Governor Nathan Deal launched REACH Georgia in 2012 as a statewide needs-based mentorship and scholarship program. It provides academically promising students who have a demonstrated financial need with the academic, social, and financial support to help make their dreams of post-secondary education a reality. The program supports students throughout the entire state.

The official signing ceremony was recently held at the Cobb County School District office to recognize the following students:

At the signing ceremony, each eighth-grade student, their families, and school district employees entered into a contract to support the student’s efforts to maintain a 2.5 HOPE GPA or higher, continue to have good behavior and school attendance and to meet with a volunteer mentor and academic coach throughout high school.

In addition to their families, students were joined by other members of the school community invested in their success as students, including their school principals, Superintendent Chris Ragsdale, and members of the Cobb Schools Foundation.

“We are thrilled to be celebrating with such bright students. Through the REACH GA Program and Georgia Student Finance Commission, we are dedicated to helping students access higher education by providing financial aid options and programs to make college more affordable,” shared Lynne Riley, President of Student Finance Commission.

The REACH Georgia program allots eight scholarship opportunities for Cobb students per year. The success of the program depends on community support. For each student, the Cobb Schools Foundation must raise $4,000, and REACH Georgia will match it by 2.5 times for a total scholarship worth $10,000.

“North Cobb Rotary supports the Cobb Schools Foundation’s REACH program and invests in our community in many ways. We have wonderful members who really rise to the calling of service. We are happy to support this program. It’s kind of a no-brainer because our $4,000 donation instantly becomes worth $10,000,” shared Naceo Denney, North Cobb Rotary President.

TOOLS FOR BACK TO SCHOOL

ATLANTA – September 1, 2021 - The Cobb Schools Foundation was a recipient of the Publix Super Markets Tools for Back-to-School register collection campaign. Last week, Bruce Humphries, District Manager in the Cobb area, along with two local store managers, made a special in-person delivery of over $120,000 in gift cards for teachers and students.

We thank you for your contributions if you have shopped at a local Cobb County Publix and opted to support the Tools for Back to School campaign. Your donation will go to help Cobb County students who need support with basic school necessities, such as pens, markers, crayons, or notebooks. In most cases, teachers have been known to purchase school supplies using their own money to provide these resources. Thanks to the Tools for Back-to-School campaign, teachers and students can focus on doing what’s most important, teaching and learning respectively.

“The Cobb Schools Foundation is overjoyed to receive the generosity of our local Publix shoppers. These gift cards will be distributed throughout the county to serve students in needs as well as teachers who are doing all that they can to create the best learning experience for students”, shared Frank Wigington, President of the Cobb Schools Foundation.

CCSD School Nurse Recognition Event

We have over 130 school nurses throughout Cobb Schools dedicated to keeping our students healthy and safe. This year we are recognizing our healthcare heroes in Cobb schools. Caring for students is what our school nurses do everyday. They are trained to deliver care while students are in school, whether it’s administering important medication or assisting with the additional concerns brought on by the pandemic—we say thank you, we see you.

On April 28th, on the Osborne High School campus, the Cobb Schools Foundation will hold a drive-through event to celebrate our school nurses!

REACH Scholarship

In partnership with REACH Georgia, the Cobb Schools Foundation is excited to announce a unique scholarship opportunity for Cobb students. REACH Georgia is a needs-based mentoring and scholarship program designed to ensure that the state's academically promising students have the academic, social, and financial support needed to graduate from high school and complete post-secondary education.

This partnership is designed to inspire young students to reimagine their educational pathway. The REACH Georgia Scholarship Program is designed to seek out students who demonstrate academic promise, but may not have the personal motivation, academic preparation or financial support they need to obtain a post-secondary degree, diploma or career certificate.

REACH Scholars Student Profile

REACH Scholars are in the Seventh (7th) grade have promising performance to maintain a 2.5 HOPE-Calculated GPA, remain crime, drug, and behavior issue free, and meet with a volunteer mentor and academic coach until they graduate from high school.

Mentors

All scholars are paired with an academic coach, which is often a teacher or counselor, and a mentor. Mentors are expected to develop a meaningful relationship with students that provides extra support through high school and towards post-secondary opportunities. Powerful things happen when an experienced person shows interest in and helps another individual grow and develop. When mentoring is done well, all parties benefit. Both the mentor and mentee learn and grow. Mentors should be checking in with their mentees twice a month to make sure things are going as best as they can. Funding

With the support of the community and matching funds from REACH Georgia these scholars will receive up to $10,000 towards a post-secondary scholarship upon completing high school. Every dollar ($1) raised up to $4,000 per student through the Cobb Schools Foundation, REACH Georgia will match it with $2.50, for a total of $6,000. Spanish-speaking Future Educator Scholarship

The Cobb Schools Foundation is excited to announce a new scholarship opportunity. The Spanish-Speaking Future Educator Scholarship has been established through a donation from Board of Education member of Post 2, Dr. Jaha Howard. This scholarship will go towards strengthening our educator pipeline.

Dr. Howard owns a pediatric dentist office in the Vinings area and is passionate about meeting the needs of Cobb’s Spanish-speaking student population. This scholarship is intended to encourage Spanish-speaking students who are pursuing careers in Education to come back and teach in the Cobb County School District, one of the nation’s top school districts and one of the educational leaders in producing the most graduates each year.

“Building a pipeline for future educators is important to me as a Cobb resident and business owner. With a growing number of Spanish-speaking students, we are positioned better to meet their needs with educators who can speak their first language,” said Dr. Howard.

The Cobb Schools Foundation partners with all high school counselors to promote available scholarships to students throughout Cobb. In the spring of 2020, Cobb celebrated graduating nearly 90% of their high school seniors.

“We are proud to partner with Dr. Howard on this important initiative and hope to reach students who may not have considered the incredible impact they can make on future students whose first language is Spanish,” Felicia Wagner of the Cobb Schools Foundation shared.

Patrick Key Memorial Art Scholarship

Purpose

Patrick's family and friends would like his passion for sharing art with students to continue through Cobb teachers. Patrick sadly lost his battle to COVID-19 in December 2020 and to firmly plant his legacy, a fund is being established to provide annual grants to Cobb Art teachers each year through a submission process.

Funding Goal

To create longevity, a goal of $25,000 has been set, so this scholarship may continue in his memory.

Patrick Key served as an elementary Art teacher for over 23 years. He was a naturally talented artist and had a clear gift for teaching art to children. He spent his teaching career at Clarkdale Elementary and Hendricks Elementary, both Title I schools. His experience there gave him insight of the struggles of families working to make ends meet, which often meant art supplies could not be provided.

Despite these challenging circumstances, he ensured that all of his students had the opportunity to learn and explore all types of art media. He would happily make personal sacrifices to provide supplies for his students to allow them the freedom and enjoyment of creating beautiful works of art.

South Cobb Church Generously Gives to Help Students & Families

The Cobb Schools Foundation is proud to share a recent gift of $12,000 from Word of Faith Family Worship Cathedral in Austell. This gift is designated for technology needs at area schools located within the south Cobb community served by Word of Faith. Bishop Dale Bronner shared their congregation’s desire to provide support to students in the community.

“We believe the church should be an outstretched arm to the local community in which it is placed. With our desire to build a whole person, in whole families, of whole communities, we engage in services and events that make a significant impact.”

Support from the members of Word of Faith Worship Cathedral is making it possible to provide devices to students in nearby schools. “We are humbled by the community’s response to our students who need digital access to learning. Having limited funds to meet these needs is a difficult reality, but our friends at Word of Faith have rallied to keep students connected”, said Felicia Wagner, executive director of the Cobb Schools Foundation.

Since the start of the pandemic, the community has provided nearly 2,000 devices that will remain with students. Additional funding has provided support for students with food insecurity, housing assistance and other technology needs.

High School Student Leads Fundraising For Devices

A rising Freshman of Wheeler High School reached out to the Cobb Schools Foundation in the spring, he wanted to learn more about helping students access needed technology. This amazing student is an Eagle Scout through Boy Scouts of America and is dedicated to becoming an all-around exceptional citizen and scout.

Boy Scouts of America has been around for 110 years. Becoming an Eagle Scout is the highest achievement within the organization. The National Eagle Scout Association (NESA) helps transform the lives of youth through developing their leadership skills, character, citizenship, and physical fitness.

When the pandemic caused the closing of all schools in March of 2020, this Wheeler student didn’t miss a beat with his studies, but it weighed heavily on his heart how other students, who didn’t have technology at home, would continue their learning.

This student reached out to the Cobb Schools Foundation to learn more about some of the articles he had seen in the local news about fundraising for devices. Being an avid video gamer and youtuber, he reached out to his scout leader, Kevin Wilson, about coordinating a fundraiser to benefit students at Mabry Middle School and his soon-to-be high school, Wheeler High School.

An online Minecraft gaming fundraiser was established and with the entry fees and community donations, he was able to raise enough funds to purchase five (5) Chromebooks.

“Having a Cobb student come forward with the idea and desire to help other classmates has been so refreshing and motivating for me personally. [This student] is a really awesome kid in my book! Many Cobb students throughout the county come from economically disadvantaged homes and may not even be aware that the community is supporting them in ways like never before, let alone a fellow student,” said Felicia Wagner of the Cobb Schools Foundation.

With the announcement of continued virtual learning for the start of the fall semester, every device is needed and used by those receiving them. The Cobb County School District provided over 30,000 loaner laptops to students during the first week before school began. The Cobb Schools Foundation continues to raise funds for the growing need. Devices provided through philanthropy go to students who qualify for free and reduced lunch and the devices are theirs to keep.

“The pandemic has created challenges that needed immediate solutions without a lot of additional resources. We are grateful for funds such as the CARES Act that has made digital learning more accessible, giving us the ability to assess students for current learning needs and potential learning gaps. We know that some remediation will be needed and as we mature in our CTLS platform we can be more prescriptive in our ability to assess and remediate if needed. Our schools cannot begin to imagine our vision of every student having success without the support from our community. The fact that a student of ours had it in him to help his fellow classmates is something that I know his parents are proud of, but as Superintendent, I am extremely proud of,” said Chris Ragsdale Superintendent of Cobb County Schools.

The Cobb Schools Foundation has been the recipient of local generosity perpetuated through our community of faith. We cannot possibly share our gratitude with each member of these congregations, but we do want everyone to know that our community of faith supports student

success every day in Cobb, and we notice.

The Cobb Schools Foundation, this year alone, has been the recipient of over $ 150,000 in support of technology needs throughout the Cobb County School District that serves over 112,000 students. Nearly half of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch each year. The

needs of students have increased significantly due to the effects of the pandemic. Student safety and well-being is a priority for everyone, and many leaders from our community of faith have expressed their concerns. Economic barriers exist in a virtual or face-to-face setting and

because of the growing support from the community, we are able to continue supporting the increased number of families who find themselves in shelters or nearly homeless.

North Metro Church shared that they asked their church whether or not the community would miss them if they were to disappear. They consistently work towards taking deliberate actions to “be missed.” Without the support of our community of faith, we want to share what Cobb students would miss without you:

WSBTV Awards Cobb Schools Nearly $10,000

The Cobb Schools Foundation is excited to have partnered with WSBTV & Georgia Public Education Foundation for Stuff the Bus 2020! Together more than $109,000 was raised to help get kids across Metro Atlanta the school supplies they need to succeed. Out of that amount, nearly $10,000 will go directly back to Cobb County School students who are in the greatest need of school supplies.

Partnerships Working for Students

NSPG Global, a company based in Kennesaw, recently donated 17 new devices to the Cobb Schools Foundation after learning that Cobb students would be returning to school virtually this fall.

With over 113,000 students attending Cobb Schools and nearly half qualifying for free or reduced lunch, the additional needs of students and their families, caused by the pandemic, are profound. The Cobb Schools Foundation will continue to seek financial support that will provide students with needed technology as well as other needs related to family stabilization.

“We are so fortunate to live in the most generous county where parents, businesses, churches, everyone continues to support the education of our students. We were able to provide hundreds of devices in the S pring thanks to the generosity of hundreds of supporters in Cobb. We also have many relationships with other nonprofits in the community, and we are working tirelessly on building a collaborative network to meet all the immediate needs of families in our community, especially those caused by the pandemic,” said Felicia Wagner, executive director for the Cobb Schools Foundation.

The devices provided by NSPG Global will be paired with students at Bryant Elementary School due to other partnerships between Communities in Schools of Georgia in Marietta/Cobb (CIS) and Kennesaw State University (KSU). CIS has worked to host an Advanced Intern from KSU who serves as a site coordinator at the elementary school where 87% of its students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

“A CIS site coordinator fills a pivotal role coordinating and providing integrated student supports. They work with school leadership and staff to connect students and families with community resources that help address both academic and nonacademic needs. They coordinate community resources that can provide students with the supports they need to succeed both inside and outside the classroom. In the wake of COVID-19, coordinators have gone beyond the school walls to support students and families in the community they live,” explained Natalie Rutledge, CIS executive director.

The site coordinator from KSU will use the devices provided by NSPG Global to help keep the young Bryan students connected. “The vision of the Cobb County School District is to ensure that all students succeed, and this is one example of how, together, we can work through partnerships for the benefits of our students,” said Cobb Schools Superintendent Chris Ragsdale.

As a result, our Family 2 Family project is working to expand our Stuff the Bus drive to help support as many students as possible. Our annual school supply drive historically encouraged our viewers to donate supplies at school buses parked around metro Atlanta. The Dr. Kathie Elliott Scholarship

Dr. Kathie Elliott devoted 33 years of dedicated service to the Cobb County School District, leaving a lasting impact on students, educators, and future leaders across the district. Her career began in the classroom as an elementary school teacher and evolved into school leadership, where she served as principal at Eastside Elementary, Varner Elementary, and Kennesaw Elementary. Along the way, Dr. Elliott also shared her expertise in Human Resources, supporting and strengthening the district from multiple perspectives.

Even after retiring, Dr. Elliott’s passion for developing others never slowed. She continued to mentor and coach aspiring school leaders through Berry College and supervised student teachers through Kennesaw State University—ensuring that the next generation of educators was prepared, confident, and inspired.

In honor of her remarkable legacy, the Dr. Kathie Elliott Scholarship was established to support current Cobb County School District employees who are continuing their educational journeys to advance professionally. This scholarship is designed to uplift those who are investing in their growth and expanding their impact within the district.

Eligible applicants may be pursuing:

A GED
Paraprofessional certification
Specialized credentials related to their current role
Other educational pathways that enhance skills and career opportunities within CCSD

Each scholarship award is $1,000 and may be applied toward tuition, certification fees, or other approved educational expenses. Applications are reviewed year-round, ensuring ongoing opportunities for professional development and advancement.

Cobb Schools Foundation Receives $45,000 Grant

The Cobb Schools Foundation is pleased to announce it will receive a $45,000 grant to cover costs associated with providing social workers, economic aid, and devices for tele-health during the Summer to Cobb County families in need.

Through a strong partnership with Cobb Community Foundation, the Cobb Schools Foundation will be the recipient of gifts being made by the Zeist Foundation and the Jesse Parker Williams Foundation. The grant will go towards making social workers available throughout the Summer months to CCSD’s at-risk students.

The Cobb Schools Foundation was created to serve the needs of its nearly 113,000 students across Cobb County. As 2020 has brought on its share of unfortunate events, now more than ever, Cobb County School District understands its responsibility to not only its students, but their entire families. The Cobb Schools Foundation is here to ensure our students have a healthy, safe, environment that stretches beyond the walls of the school building. Because of this generous donation, five social workers will be able to work modified hours through the Summer. Funding may also be used to support family stabilization efforts for our most vulnerable student population. During the 2019/2020 school year CCSD social workers were a vital part of supporting nearly 1,500 homeless students and their families. In addition to the homeless population our social workers provided over 4,500 individual student conferences throughout the year.

Funding will primarily go towards the social workers. Some of the social services they are able to provide & track include: Partnering agency referrals/visits, DFCS, Direct referrals, economic aid, health services, home visits, juvenile and other courts, and mental health.

In addition, because of the disproportionate impact COVID-19 has had on underserved communities, some of the funds may be used for family stabilization efforts, which may include providing tele-health calls and financial assistance for housing, transportation, and school materials (including devices).

Empowering students with the tools to overcome these challenges helps them advance in education today and enables them to continue on a pathway of having successful futures.

Cobb Schools Foundation is making intentional efforts to remove barriers that may get in the way of critical learning opportunities. As we still do not understand what the Fall will look like and how our students will return to school, we want to ensure our students continue to have access to resources and basic family needs throughout the Summer months to prevent any unnecessary gaps in learning and stabilization.

According to Felicia Wagner, “The Cobb Schools Foundation is humbled by the generosity of the Cobb Community, Zeist, and Jesse Parker Williams Foundations. Budget limitations for schools typically means limitations for something that we can enhance for the student experience. With 2020 bringing immeasurable disruption, we are thankful to be recognized as a steward of these funds. We know that the impact of this support will be something that students can rely on during the summer months, but also minimizes their disruption through these crucial support roles. The Cumulative totals are over 7,000 contacts during the 2019/20 school year.”

While the journey to equality and justice for all is still a long road ahead, the Cobb Schools Foundation is committed to staying the course, ensuring Cobb County students have the very best and the county is living up to its mission of One Team. One Goal. Student Success.

Cobb Schools Foundation Provides Digital Devices to Families in Need

On Tuesday morning, Cobb parent Heather Smith took a brief break from overseeing the instruction of her four boys to drive to Osborne High School where she picked up a new computer to help her kids with their digital learning.

This week, more than 600 Cobb parents like Ms. Smith will be able to pick up new free digital devices thanks to the Cobb Schools Foundation campaign to put the learning tools in the hands of those in need. The Foundation’s campaign has raised $185,000 of its $250,000 goal to buy digital devices. To support the campaign visit the Cobb Schools Family Stabilization Donation page.

“We are grateful to all those who have supported our campaign and understand that students who experience a lapse in learning may experience academic challenges in the near future. We want all students to continue to have success and have the tools and resources needed to achieve their goals,” said Felicia Wagner, Executive Director of the Cobb Schools Foundation.

Before Heather Smith picked up one of the new donated devices, she was struggling to meet her sons’ digital learning needs.

“I was unprepared. I had a broken tablet that had been disconnected for like 3-4 years,” Ms. Smith explained.

She had tried to make do with an outdated computer that has since stopped working and some old phones she managed to connect to WiFi. Unfortunately, one of her sons suffers from migraines and the tiny phone screens were no good for his eyes and headaches. She tried to buy another digital device herself but couldn’t find an available one due to delays in shipping and everyone snatching them up in response to businesses and schools closing to prevent the spread of COVID-19. She tried to find someone to fix her old computer but had no luck.

“Everywhere was sold out, and I didn’t know where to go. I can’t afford for every kid to have their own laptop or desktop,” she added.

Her sons’ teachers were staying in daily contact providing digital lessons, but she was starting to feel overwhelmed navigating all the emails on her phone. One day, a teacher checked in to see how she was managing. That was the lifeline she needed and the one that helped her family get the new digital device they need to continue their learning from home.

“I’m appreciative. It definitely takes a lot of stress off me. Everywhere was sold out. I didn’t know what to do. It all happened so fast,” the Cobb mom said.

She didn’t know who to thank for her new device. She didn’t know about the donations coming in from across the Cobb Schools community and the Cobb alumni stepping up to help the Cobb Schools Foundation campaign.

When asked what she would tell those who have supported the Cobb Schools Foundation campaign, like the Hamels Foundation, this is what she said:

“Thank you so much for coming through during a time of desperation and need for our next generation to proceed with their education and not feel so disconnected.”

Communities In Schools of Georgia is providing an additional 125 devices to students at Title I schools.

“We have worked with the school social workers and Cobb Schools Foundation to ensure that we do not provide to the same student. This way, we can both provide technology to students in need and not duplicate the recipients,” said Natalie Rutledge, Executive Director of Communities in Schools of Georgia in Marietta/Cobb County.

Cobb parents and students are not the only ones who are grateful for the new digital connections. Thanks to the digital devices, Cobb teachers can continue their relationship with their students, which is critical to the educational process.

Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, United Way Greater Atlanta Award $50,000 Grant to Cobb Schools Foundation

The Greater Atlanta COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund, a joint effort from Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta and United Way of Greater Atlanta recently announced that the Cobb Schools Foundation will receive $50,000 as part of the Fund’s sixth round of grants.

“We are very grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and organizations like the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta and United Way of Greater Atlanta. Due to COVID-19, the needs of our students have changed and it will take our entire community coming together to meet those needs,” said Cobb Schools Superintendent Chris Ragsdale.

To date, the Greater Atlanta COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund has raised more than $25 million through collective resources and have provided funds for areas of greatest need and the most vulnerable populations.

This sixth round of grants total $5.3 million and will be distributed to 245 organizations, including the Cobb Schools Foundation, in response to the region’s needs as a result of COVID-19. A grand total of more than $17.3 million from the Fund has been mobilized to benefit 320 nonprofits thus far.

When the COVID-19 pandemic forced schools across Cobb to shutter their doors and transition to digital learning, the Cobb Schools Foundation quickly responded by launching a campaign to put digital devices in the hands of students in need.

Thanks to the community’s support and donations to the Foundation’s campaign, family after family—hundreds—pulled through the Osborne High School parking lot to pick up their free learning device.

“Thank you so much for coming through during a time of desperation and need for our next generation to proceed with their education and not feel so disconnected,” praised one mother of four who picked up a device for her sons.

That is the type of assistance the Cobb Schools Foundation will be able to continue to provide with the help of the recent grant.

“The Foundation is so fortunate to have received this generous gift from the Greater Atlanta COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund,” said Felicia Wagner, Executive Director of Cobb Schools Foundation. “So many supporters in Georgia have been intentional in supporting families severely affected by the pandemic and their support allows us to address barriers that get in the way of learning. These funds will go directly towards helping Cobb students reclaim their opportunity for the best education and, ultimately, a bright future.”
